How To Roast Coffee Beans?
If you are a coffee lover, you already know that freshly roasted beans are by far the most delicious. And what could be fresher than self-fried coffee? This process may seem difficult, but it is much easier than you think.
There are three easy ways for you to roast your coffee beans at home: in the pan on the stove, in the oven, and in the popcorn popper. We are going to introduce you to these methods with all the steps of roasting beans using these methods.
How to Roast Coffee Beans: Different Methods

A safety note: Coffee beans will overheat. I recommend hand and eye protection when frying. In addition, coffee will be very smoky when fried, and oils can be released into the air. It is best to roast coffee outside if possible. If you can’t fry outside, make sure your area is well ventilated.
Remember, when learning how to roast coffee, there are many ways to do it, but the process is the same for each method. There are several to choose from:
Place the iron pan on the grill or stove.
Cast iron retains its heat well and is evenly heated, making it a great choice for roasting coffee. I like to do my work on the grill, but you can do it on your stove if you want. Ceramic coated or stainless steel pans also work well, just don’t use anything that is non-stick or coated. The heat must be very high and heating a non-stick pan so hot can be toxic.
Cookie sheet in the oven
This method also works well, but it involves a lot of stirring and smoking. It’s not easy to roast coffee like this, but it can be done.
Hot Air Pop Corn Popper
Using popcorn is the way many rosters start, including myself. I had an outlet outside and I put a popper on the picnic table. Popcorn poppers have a built-in agitation arm so you don’t need to stir. They reach the right temperature without constantly checking the operator. Most popcorn poppy warranties contain a clause stating that if used for anything other than popcorn the warranty is void, so make sure it is not a concern. ۔ At best, your paper will only last 4-5 roasts, so I’ll get a cheap one to get started.
Stovetop or manual popcorn paper
Like hot air poppers, stove poppers work well. But you need to manually crank the coffee beans to move them.
Coffee grinder
My first coffee roaster was an IRoast, a very affordable machine that does all the work for you. I got mine at a yard sale, but they can run new for $ 200 or more. Other brands include FreshRoast and Nesco and are available online. They may be expensive, but they are designed to last, unlike popcorn poppers.
How to Roast Coffee Beans

When learning how to roast coffee beans, remember, that this process is very similar to all the different methods.
The important thing to remember is that not all candies are the same, the temperature and the machines may be different, and your preferences will be different. Experience! I burned my first batch because I thought it would take longer. Even in a commercial machine, the whole roasting process takes less than 14 minutes – and that’s with a 50-pound bag!
👉 1. First, choose and buy green coffee beans. (Find organic green coffee beans here.) Next, warm up your roaster. For popcorn poppers and roasting machines, turn them on and set them to the right temperature if needed. For pans and ovens or grills, heat to 450 ° F and 500 ° F. It must be very hot. Oil is not needed because coffee makes its own oil and cooking oil will burn at these temperatures.
👉 2. Add coffee beans to your roster. For machines, use about 3 cups for poppers and follow the instructions for roasting machines. For the pan, spread a thin layer on the pan, and spread the beans thinly. This will also ensure warmth and frying.
👉 3. If you are using a pan, shake the beans constantly. Wear protective clothing as it is going to be very hot!
👉 4. Light frying takes 4-6 minutes and medium frying takes 5-8 minutes. Start listening for “crack” first. This listening pop is a sign of the first stage, which will give a light roast. If you prefer a medium roast, listen to the second “crack” usually about 7 minutes. Leave the beans for another 30 seconds to 1 minute for a deep roast. Watch them carefully as they can burn quickly at this stage!
👉 5. When the beans are done, turn off the heat and transfer to stainless steel or ceramic coated colander. Avoid using plastic – it will melt. The beans will still be very hot, so use warm pad holders. I use two calendars and throw the beans at each other, taking out the straw from them. (Green coffee beans are a protective silver skin on the outside that becomes the dry straw that needs to be removed. If not removed, the coffee will taste good.) If you do this outside, the air is for you.
How long does it take to roast coffee beans?
The time it takes to roast coffee beans with a homemade coffee roaster depends on your specific model, the temperature you use, how many beans you use together and how deeply you like your beans. Can be quite different. In this tutorial, we took 26 to 50 minutes in a light to deep roast.
Reasons to Roast Your Own Coffee

If you are buying green beans, you can also customize the mixture, combining a few types of beans to get a different flavor profile.

Lighter, with more caffeine and more acidity, medium for less acidity and more flavor, or darker with stronger flavor and less caffeine. Coffee beans contain over 800 compounds that change during the roasting process. This is known as the Maillard reaction. You also see it on chopped meat and browning.
